some hide. they seek.

Sanctuary for All ... can you tell why I like this title??? It's the episode name for the two hour premiere of SciFi Channel's new series, Sanctuary. Stargate's Amanda Tapping is back with a Victorian English accent as the 157 year old scientist, Dr. Helen Magnus. Helen runs a secret laboratory, she inherited from her father ... a brilliant scientist who taught her everything she knows, including the strange mysteries and creatures that inhabit our world. Like BBC America's scifi series, Torchwood, it's her job to study, protect and if necessary, capture and imprison these creatures. The "abnormals" are creatures of myth and legend, yet apparently are real and living among us mere humans. But, their origins may hold the key to our own existence ... and possibly, the future of humanity, itself.

Dr. Magnus doesn't do all this on her own, she also has the help of her feisty daughter, Ashley, and the wise-cracking tech, Henry. And in the opener, Helen meets and attempts to recruit a forensic psychiatrist, Dr. Will Zimmerman. Will recently lost his job with the Feds, due to his rather strange explainations to solving grizzly crimes. No one really wants to believe that monsters are real. And, of course, what team of good guys would be without an evil nemesis, a powerful "abnormal" that can appear and disappear, at will. But, John Druitt is more than just a villain, he also shares a mysterious past with Helen.

  • Dr. Helen Magnus - Amanda Tapping (Stargate: Continuum, Stargate: The Ark of Truth, Stargate: Atlantis, Stargate SG-1, Earthsea, Millenium, The X-Files, and Forever Knight)
  • Dr. Will Zimmerman - Robin Dunne (Species 3, Dead Like Me, American Psycho 2: All American Girl)
  • Ashley Magnus - Emilie Ullerup (Blood Ties, Battlestar Galactica)
  • Henry Foss - Ryan Robbins (Battlestar Galactica, Painkiller Jane, Stargate: Atlantis, Blade: The Series, Stephen King's Kingdom Hospital, and Seven Days)
  • John Druitt - Christopher Heyerdahl (Todd the Wraith in Stargate: Atlantis, Smallville, The Dead Zone, Blade: Trinity, Catwoman, The Chronicles of Riddick, Stephen King's Kingdom Hospital, Jeremiah, Stargate SG-1, Andromeda, John Doe, Matthew Blackheart: Monster Smasher, Le Femme Nikita, Highlander 3, and Are You Afraid of the Dark?)

Beyond the cool storyline, this tv series breaks ground for some interesting special effects. First, it is shot primarily with a green screen, which saves a ton of cash for production and expensive sets, and allows for much more in special effects. But, it also features a unique camera called, The Red Camera, which is more a computer with a lens on it, than your average digital camera.

Sanctuary airs Friday nights on SciFi Channel, beginning October 3rd, 2008.
