I probably should review the synopsis of this new novel by the returning Stephen King, since it does not do any sort of justice to this intriguing science fiction story. That's right - I said science fiction, not horror. Dreamcatcher, just as Tommyknockers, is a science fiction story ... it involves aliens ... which makes this science fiction, not horror. It could be argued in Tommyknockers that since it involved ghosts of aliens it must be classified horror. And with Dreamcatcher, maybe the strange powers-of-the-mind these four men share put this in the catagory of supernatural, thus horror still. But I read the over six hundred pages of Dreamcatcher and this is definately science fiction. Is War of the Worlds a horror story?

Dreamcatcher (and it takes about 500 pages before you begin to understand this reference) is the story about four young men, childhood pals that gather each year to their favorite cabin during hunting season. After King's odd introduction of each of these four individuals, the story begins in this cabin but most of it takes place beyond it. And it all gets kickstarted by a strange man with some serious bowel problems (don't ask, just a warning) stumbling into their camp, and forever changing their lives. Carefully weaving past and present events, Stephen King spins quite a tale revolving around an alien crash nearby and our government's covert action to contain it all. The bond, and the memories the four childhood pals share is classic King. Also classic King, there is no single villian. Instead, there are many that must be dealt with ... and of course, an unlikely hero found in a very unique person.

All the elements that make up a great Stephen King novel are present here, so if anyone ever believed he might not write again after his accident, this book should convince everyone, including King himself, that all is well and the King is back. Dreamcatcher is a wonderful and unique scifi excursion that will touch your heart, make you laugh outloud and grip you not with fear, but anxious anticipation of what will happen next ... and what could it all mean. And from this fan of 20 or so years, thank you Stephen King, for another fine story I truly enjoyed. ... SSDD ;){mos_fb_discuss:9}
