Best-selling Author and Medical Suspense Master, Dr. Robin Cook, thrills us once more with technological advancements beyond our comprehension in Abduction. The story begins harmless enough with an offshore drilling team desperately trying to bring up core samples from the ridge of undersea mountains in the Mid-Atlantic ocean. However, they discover something mysterious that ultimately draws them into a hidden world beneath ... an ancient world ... and an ageless culture. The “abducted” team of five: two macho divers, their ex-Navy supervisor, an intelligent female scientist, and a nervous company exec who just came along for the ride - are drawn into an awesome and terrifyingly beautiful world that has watched and studied mankind since the dawn of evolution. They discover the truth behind all of mans great myths and mysteries - Atlantis, Aliens and even the gods. They are shown amazing scientific achievements, and an incredible utopian society. A perfect world, where every need and desire is satisfied. No violence, no wars, no crime. A world where man is no longer confined to a mortal existence ... a virtual Heaven on Earth. After the character introductions, and rather daunting dialog concerning life of drilling operations (Dr. Cook graciously adds a glossary of terms used in the novel), Abduction kidnaps the reader and refuses to release us until its final, and uniquely shocking end. I read the first 24 pages one afternoon, and by the next sitting I couldn’t put it down - finishing the remaining 376 pages in under 18 hours! An amazing novel. My only complaint would be a shift in what I thought was the main character of the story, company exec Perry Bergman. And I found it impossible to sympathize the darker characters, even though I was equally suspicious of this brave, new world and its all-too benign inhabitants. But perhaps that was part of this lesson-of-sorts to our own destructive and “primitive” nature ... I dunno. I don’t care to dig to deeply into the motivation behind fiction. I just love great storytelling. And this is an awesome story for all sci-fi buffs!
